Urban Sketching
Overview:
Urban sketching is a wonderfully satisfying way to capture quick impressions and memories of your travels and experiences, especially in a colorful city like New Orleans. However, urban sketching isn't limited to picturesque city settings—it can happen anywhere you can bring a sketchbook and some basic supplies:
- In your car
- At a coffee shop or bar
- At a bus stop or laundromat
In this class, we will explore:
- Finding the materials that work best for you
- Avoiding the tendency to "overpack"
- Choosing the right location (or letting it choose you)
- Working "fast and loose"
- Composition and perspective (and when to ignore it)
- Overcoming the fear of drawing in public
- Practical considerations like safety ("where do I stand?")
Students will complete assignments at various New Orleans locations to enhance observation, encourage creative problem-solving, and rediscover the joy of sketching.
Details:
- All skill levels are welcome.
- Most sessions will take place outdoors. If standing for long periods is difficult, consider bringing a light folding chair.
Supply List:
- Sketchbook(s): 7"x10" multimedia sketchbook recommended if unsure; bring what you're comfortable with.
- Pencils
- Ballpoint or fountain pen
- Optional supplies: Colored pencils, watercolors, crayons, markers, or other portable tools.
- Essentials: Water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing.
