Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

Description:
This course is based on the twelve-week program in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, an art educator who believed drawing relies more on learned skills than natural talent. Edwards explains the perceptual shift from verbal, analytical processing to a right-brained mode of processing visual information that is non-verbal and concrete.

The instructor will guide students through exercises designed to help shift from left- to right-mode visual processing. During the course, students will complete a variety of drawing projects, culminating in a self-portrait. Suitable for all skill levels.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

Shift their mode of perception from an analytic symbol system to an artist mode.
Produce drawings using a variety of mediums.
Become familiar with basic line elements, edges, contours, and negative space.
Accurately reproduce value and understand its impact on a drawing.
Demonstrate accurate proportion and perspective.
Understand and apply basic color theory.

Materials Needed:

Book: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards (TarcherPerigee, Any Edition)
Drawing Pad: Inexpensive, 9" x 12"
Graphite Drawing Pencils: Set of six
4B Black Graphite Stick (not charcoal)
Conté Crayon Assorted Colors: Set of 12 (Buy "Assorted," not "Sketching," "Portrait," or "Landscape")
One Conté Crayon: Sanguine
Pencil Sharpener
Erasers: Polymer Eraser, Kneaded Eraser, and Tombow Eraser Pen (available on Amazon)
Self-Portrait Mirror: Any mirror, at least 8" x 10", that can stand freely on a tabletop (available on Amazon)

Additional Fees:

Materials to create a viewfinder and picture plane will be provided for a $5 fee.
Toned Pastel Paper and Drawing Paper (11" x 17") will be supplied for a small fee.
