Pen and Ink: Exploring Texture and Expression

Description:
Few media can match the expressiveness and immediacy of pen and ink. Drawing inspiration from:

  • The great masters of the Renaissance,
  • Minimalist landscape artists of Japan,
  • Classic book illustrators of the 19th and early 20th centuries,

Students will explore how pen and ink can create an endless variety of textures and effects.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Techniques such as cross-hatching, stippling, scumbling, and contour lines to render three-dimensional forms and create value.
  • Use of pens, brushes, India ink, and ink wash through exercises and projects that guide students toward discovering their unique style.

Prerequisites:
Some drawing experience is recommended but not required.

Supplies:

  • India Ink: Speedball Super Black or another waterproof brand
  • Brushes:
    • #2 round pointed brush
    • 2-3 watercolor brushes of various sizes
  • Paper: Bristol Board pad (smooth), 9"x12" or larger
  • Sketchbook, Pencils, and Eraser
  • White Gouache or Acrylic Paint: Small tube
  • Pen Nib and Holder Sets: Available for purchase on the first day of class for $5
