Introduction to Digital Photography

Description:
This course will teach you the basics of using your digital camera and creating images. Topics include:

Camera Basics: Identifying your camera and its basic functions.
Exposure Fundamentals: Understanding aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and how they visually translate in your photos.
Composition: Examining and practicing the elements of composition to create compelling and aesthetically pleasing images.

Additional topics include:

Documentary and Portrait Photography
Editing Techniques: Using Adobe Photoshop or alternative software.
File Management: Proper file storage, workflow, and data archiving.

The course concludes with an exercise on finding your visual voice, applying the knowledge acquired during the course.

Note:
Photography is learned best by doing. Practice regularly, shooting 100+ pictures per week, and bring questions to class often!

Resources:

Class lectures, videos, infographics, and images will be available through Google Drive.
Printed copies of most materials can be requested.

Prerequisites:
None

Supplies:

Camera: A digital camera (no film); an SLR is encouraged but not required. Cell phone cameras are not sufficient. Cameras with RAW capability are recommended but not essential.
Laptop/Tablet: Photo editing software is ideal (e.g., Adobe Photoshop). iPhoto can be used if Photoshop is not an option. All work will be shared digitally, except for the final project.
Digital Storage: External hard drive, thumb drive, or online storage. Wifi is available.
