Introduction to Digital Photography

Description:
This course teaches the fundamentals of using a digital camera and creating compelling images.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Camera Basics:
    • Identify your camera and its basic functions.
    • Understand aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and how these settings affect your photos.
  • Composition:
    • Examine and practice the elements of composition for aesthetically pleasing images.
  • Photography Techniques:
    • Explore Documentary and Portrait Photography.
  • Photo Editing:
    • Learn editing techniques using Adobe Photoshop or alternative software.
  • Data Management:
    • Proper file storage, workflow, and archiving.
  • Finding Your Visual Voice:
    • Apply acquired knowledge to define and develop your unique photographic style.

Hands-On Practice:
Photography is learned best by doing!

  • Shoot 100+ pictures per week.
  • Bring questions and share your progress in class.

Resources:

  • Class lectures, videos, infographics, and images available through Google Drive.
  • Printed copies of materials available upon request.

Prerequisites:
None

Supplies:

  • Camera: A digital camera (no film!). SLR encouraged but not required.
    • Cell phone cameras are not sufficient.
    • RAW capability is helpful but not essential.
  • Laptop/Tablet: Photo editing software (e.g., Photoshop) is ideal. iPhoto can be used if Photoshop is not available.
  • Digital Storage: External hard drive, thumb drive, or online storage.
  • Sketch/Notebook for notes and ideas.
