Introduction to Realism in Acrylic - Sean Friloux
In this class we will discuss an introduction to forms, shapes, edges and tonal ranges to create the illusion of depth and light in an acrylic painting.
After practicing the process we will put them together to create emotional, impactful paintings or studies using a choice of subjects ranging from a rural landscape, interior scene to a street scene.
This class focuses on giving students a thoughtful approach to the medium of acrylic through working from reference photographs and/or painting from sketches.
It will include discussions on:
1. materials
2. color mixing
3. Drawing
4. brush strokes and basic acrylic painting methods (layering, dry brush and glazing)
5. composition and design
*Classes will include instructor demonstrations and exercises. There will also be optional weekly homework exercises.
Supplies:
Acrylic palette or equivalent
Selection of brushes: including
acrylic synthetic round brush (for example 8)
1' and 2’ flat acrylic synthetic brushes
a rigger brush (for example 4)

Pyrrole Red
Burnt Sienna
Ultramarine Blue

Titanium White

16”x20” canvas or larger (stretched or on board)

2H pencil

Light brown masking tape (not blue)
Small water spray bottle
Sean Friloux lives and works in New Orleans and is accomplished in watercolor, graphite drawings and acrylic. His work has been featured in Plein Air Magazine and Watercolor Artist Magazine.
