Intro to Figure Drawing for Youth - This class is separated into (2) 6-week sessions: Jan18-Mar8 and Mar15-Apr26 : You will choose which sesison in the next step
Learning anatomy is one of the essential lessons in drawing practice. Learning to draw human anatomy helps kids learn about their body proportions and how to approach drawing human figures.
From a young age drawing figures is part of exploring and getting to know ourselves and our environments. But later on, because figure drawing was restricted to nude models, the practices were restricted to portraits only. This class is designed with models with outfits and aim to introduce figures to young age kids. As children understand the perspective around 12 years old based on their brain development, it is the proper age to start figure drawing also.
CONTENT: The main goal of this class is disciplining the hand to translate what the eye sees onto the drawing surface. Through the repeated physical activity of drawing, students will refine their dexterity and intellectual powers of observation and visualization. Students will work primarily from observation to strengthen their perceptual abilities. Students will produce works on paper, all thoughtfully considered in both observation and technique. Students will develop technical skills expand their understanding and definition of drawing, and proactively learn from new artists whose works will be introduced every other session.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The course has two primary objectives: first, to embellish the student’s disciplining of the hand to work in concert with the eye through techniques, devices, and tools. Second, the course should attune the student to how these aspects of drawing might be utilized in visually conveying specific concerns. Through each practice, we will develop a growing understanding of spatial relationships to develop visual and material language for two-dimensional space.
MEASURABLE OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- Learn to draw with more confidence and skill.
- Strengthen their observational skills.
- Understand the accuracy of drawn relationships (line, scale, shape, volume, value, texture, etc.)
- Learning about values and linear perspectives in figures.
Introduce artists: Since learning to draw requires learning how to see, looking at accomplished artists’ renderings throughout history is an important discipline to maintain. At the beginning of every practice, I will give a short presentation about the practice of the day and introduce some new artists related to the class practice.
Supplies: Supplies are included for all youth classes. If additional suplies are needed, the instructor will contact the parent
