Course Title: Exploring Self Through Creative Writing and Visual Arts

Description:
This course combines in-studio drawing time with guided exercises in creative writing to explore the question: What does it mean to be a self?

Students will experiment with various writing forms, including:

  • Poetry
  • Memoir
  • Creative Non-fiction
  • Flash Fiction
  • Short Story

Each writing form is paired with a complementary visual arts exercise, such as:

  • Drawing
  • Color drawing
  • Collage

Class Structure:

  • Each session begins with short, guided exercises in creative writing and drawing, reviewing essential elements of creative writing and basic design principles.
  • Students will then work on more substantial projects.
  • Occasionally, students will collaborate in pairs and small groups.

Skill Level:
This course is suitable for all skill levels; no prior drawing or creative writing experience is required.

Materials Needed:

  • For Writing:
    • Notebook or Looseleaf Paper
    • Pen or Pencil
  • For Drawing:
    • Drawing Pad (9" x 12" or 11" x 14")
    • Set of Six Drawing Pencils
    • 4B Graphite Stick (not charcoal)
    • Pencil Sharpener
    • Polymer Eraser
    • Gum (Kneaded) Eraser
    • Tombow Eraser Pen (available on Amazon)
