Exploring Calligraphy: The Art of Making Beautiful LetterformsExploring Calligraphy: The Art of Making Beautiful Letterforms

Instructor: Patti Adams

Description: This fall, these thirteen classes are open to everyone wanting to learn calligraphy or improve their skills! We will study two different hands: italic and gothicized italic, focusing on consistent size, shape, slant, and spacing of the letterforms and layout design as you create your own artwork. The course will focus on individually guided practice and will include instructor demonstrations and viewing of many samples of calligraphic art.

This calligraphy class will focus on:

  • How to make each letter (all the minuscules and majuscules) of the two hands: italic and gothicized italic
  • Learning about inks, calligraphic materials, and pens
  • Perusing wonderful calligraphy books
  • Creating your own beautiful works of art

Each student will be charged a $50 fee for the calligraphy supply kit on the first day of class, which will include: one jar of non-waterproof ink, a pen holder and nibs, a box of ink cartridges, a Pilot Parallel pen, and a practice pad.

Note: Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting. The word derives from the ancient Greek: kallos meaning "beauty" and graph meaning "writing". It is the art of giving form to letters in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner.

Supply Fee: A $50 supply fee will be collected by Patti Adams on the first day of class.
