Color & Design I: Introduction to Color Theory

Class Description:
In this six-week class, we will explore the fundamental principles of color theory—the science and art of using color. You will:

Create your own color wheel.
Explore color values.
Gain a better understanding of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors through in-class exercises and homework assignments.

Demonstrations will be conducted using a variety of mediums, but the primary medium for this class is gouache.

Prerequisite: None

Supplies:

A supply kit containing gouache paints, pencil, eraser, brush, and a Bristol pad will be available for purchase at checkout and can be picked up on the first day of class ($150)

Additional Supplies to Bring:
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Glass or plastic containers for rinsing brushes (e.g., glass jar or plastic cup)
- White plastic or ceramic dinner plate to use as a palette (gouache can stain, so bring an old one)
- Paper towels
- Notebook and pen
- Drafting or masking tape
- Additional small brushes (recommendations will be provided during the first class)

Patti Adams is a professional artist and musician who has lived and worked in New Orleans since 1982. Her work is defined by her wide-ranging interests in calligraphy, gilding, painting in watercolor and oils, book illustration, and color theory.
