On Thursday, April 24, 2025, the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts will partner with the Urban Conservancy and Depave to host “Paint the Pavement,” a community event designed to develop a vision for new greenspace at the school’s Uptown New Orleans campus.
This engaging opportunity invites students, faculty, and interested community members to participate in painting a large-scale outdoor mural designed by NOAFA faculty member and local artist Alex Beard. The mural, which will cover the Academy’s back parking lot, will act as a blueprint for a broader initiative to transform the existing concrete into a sustainable greenspace and outdoor art studio— providing a creative oasis for students and contributing to the city’s overall environmental resilience.
“We have long needed a green space, a campus here at the Academy where students can relax, create and enjoy this creative community beyond just the studio,” says Andrew J. Rodgers, Executive Director of NOAFA. "With this event we are dedicating the lot to becoming an outdoor space that serves all our student's from the ages of 4 to 94.”
“Paint the Pavement” will feature live music from the New Orleans-based Been Around Band and the Oregon-based band Honeybucket, local food from Guy’s Po Boys, light libations, and family-friendly activities, offering the perfect start to a busy Jazz Fest Weekend in the city. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the spirit of the NOAFA community while simultaneously helping to build a greener, better future for both The Academy and the whole of Uptown New Orleans.
“We love working with New Orleanians to imagine the possibilities and equip them with the tools to go from gray to green,” says Dana Eness, Director of the Urban Conservancy. “Removing paving is the first step in creating spaces that reduce heat, absorb our stormwater, and invite people and pollinators to sit and stay awhile.”
