Artist Talk: "Excavations" & "Sedimentary"

Visit the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts Thursday, December 12th at 5PM for an Artist Talk with Nurhan Gokturk, Jonathan Goodman, Ben Hamburger, and Augustus Hoffman. Hear about their current exhibitions within the space titled “Excavations” and “Sedimentary”.

“Excavations” encompasses the collaboration of two New Orleans based artists done through the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts Residency Program. In this program, Nurhan Gokturk created a series of works inspired by ancient forms and universal objects, the memory of architecture, and elements that dissolve and decay over time.

In 2023, the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts created a one-year printmaking residency to invite an artist to create a body of work, culminating in an exhibition in the Academy's Gallery. In this inaugural residency, artist Nurhan Gokturk created a series of 23 new works which were then printed by master printmaker Jonathan Goodman to make strictly limited editions. For this collection, each work printed is one of one and is signed, numbered, and made exclusively for publishing.

In “Sedimentary”, painting is an inexact, messy science. As painters, we can fall victim to the desire for some formula to help guide us from beginning to end. But the act of creating is much more spontaneous and combustible than that.

Throughout the meandering process of making a painting, marks, shapes, and images are often destroyed only to reveal themselves in new ways later. An impulsive mark may fossilize into the scaffolding for an important passage down the line. What was once prized as sacrosanct gets washed away in a new eddy of decision making.

Acts that may feel like an erasure of past decisions are never actually going backwards, they are only moving the work towards some future self. The sediment of various struggles and resolutions accumulate to make the work itself, layered with muddled histories, many hidden beneath the surface but palpable nevertheless.

With all this in mind, we look forward to seeing you all there!
